Washington:

A new study has revealed that texting via cell phone can be good for a relationship, as it can increase intimacy by making partners more available and expanding their repertoire of connection.

However, at the same time, the study's authors cautioned that texting is devoid of important face-to-face cues, thus raises the risk of miscommunication and can cause damage to the relationship, Allthingsd.com reported.

The study by executive matchmaking service Selective Search also found that repeated texts from male partners was a negative sign for relationships and the men who rely on texting were seen as not taking the relationship seriously.

Barbie Adler, founder of the Chicago-based executive matchmaking service Adler said that, irrespective of gender, it is how one uses texting that matters the most.

Adler said that relying on texts as a primary means of communication is a bad idea for a relationship.

The study was published in Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy.
