Shopping is normal but how about shopping while floating on water? Yes, the floating market in Kolkata will leave you enthralled with the experience of shopping while on a boat.

The city of Kolkata in West Bengal is now the latest entrant into the list of floating-market destinations.

The Floating Market of Patuli

The floating market of Patuli in Kolkata is India’s first floating market set up by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) in collaboration with the municipal corporation, which functions solely on boats at the lake in Patuli.

The market located at Baishnabghata Patuli Township near Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (EM Bypass) is 400 metres long and 60 metres wide and has over 200 shops housed on 114 boats.

Visiting time and cost

The market is open through the day from 6am to 9pm. There is no entry fee. The boats will have gates, which allow buyers to make an entry and exit.

What can you get from here?

One can get anything and everything that one would have expected to shop for at any local market- from vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish and meat to household items, all sold on the boats by the vendors. There are even two salons where one can get a quick haircut.
