Established in 1989, World Population day is an annual event observed every year on July 11 to raise awareness of global population issues. While 2018, the theme was “Family planning is a human right’’, the theme for 2019 calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development where 179 governments recognized that reproductive health and gender equality are essential for achieving sustainable development.Â
When talking of ‘population’, countries such as India, United States, Russia, Bangladesh, Mexico tops the chart with China and India in the forefront. But much as it is populated in some countries, did you also know that there are some places that are so sparsely populated for reasons either of economical or geographical factors, that they are looking for people to fill in the gaps, meaning they will ‘pay’ you to live there?
Below are some places so densely populated that they will ‘pay’ you to live there:
Alaska: With picturesque snow-cape mountains and stretches of barren land, the state of Alaska, with the Alaska Permanent Fund have people living there equally paid out including children. In 2015, the amount was $2,072 a person, or $8,288 for a family of four. In 2017, it was $1,100 a person, according to Forbes.
Vermont: Last year, it was announced that under the new Remote Worker Grant Program, Vermont in 2019 will pay 100 people up to $10,000 to move to the state in 2019. To be eligible, applicants must however, be employed full-time by a business outside of Vermont. The grant will cover moving expenses, membership fees for a co-working space and more.
Candela, Italy: In 2017, the mayor of Candela, Italy began offering up to 2,000 euros (about $2,350), CNN Travel reported as an attempt to bring people back to the picturesque Medieval village that has seen its population drop from more than 8,000 residents in the 1990s to just 2,700.

Saskatchewan, Canada: Under the Graduate Retention Program, graduates living in Saskatchewan in order to cover their tuition fees, will be doled up to $20,000 CAD (about $15,956 USD)Â which comes in the form of tax credit paid out over seven years. You will however, have to have graduated from an approved post-secondary school in Canada.
