Remember Marilyn Monroe’s ‘diamonds are girl’s best friend’? Well, who can forget the diva dancing in that stunning flamingo pink dress? Closer home, looks like diamonds are farmer’s best friend! Sound odd? Well, wait till you read this….a farmer in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district has discovered a diamond worth Rs 60 lakh! Yup, you read it right! According to a Times of India report, the farmer found the diamond in his farm field at Gollavanepalli in Kurnool district. The farmer has already sold the diamond to one Allah Baksh, a local trader, for Rs 13.5 lakh cash and five tolas of gold, the TOI report said. 

The report also added that the local police has not confirmed the details. Nonetheless, the news has created a strong buzz in the diamond hunt season. For those who don’t know, the area in and around Kurnool is traditionally famous for such precious discoveries. Every year, around the time of monsoon, farmers often discover diamonds in their farm fields. Earlier in June, a shepherd had discovered an 8-carat diamond, which was sold for Rs 20 lakh, the TOI report said. The entire Krishna Basin is well-known for such discoveries of precious gemstones. The diamonds are popularly known as Golconda diamonds.

It is said that monsoon helps in removing the layers of Earth revealing the diamonds easily. Local legends say that the diamonds were part of the Vijaynagara empire that were hidden in ground.
