Upping the game of humanity above all man-made constrains, Bethune College, a Calcutta University college in the first of its kind, has introduced 'humanity' as a religion among other existing religions. The college admission form reads, ‘Humanity, Hinduism, Islam, Christian, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism and Others as an option under the religion section in its online admission form for undergraduates that took off from May 27, 2019.
"We have realised that some students are reluctant to mentioning their religion in the admission form. We appreciate their views as we feel that 'Humanity' is the true religion of mankind. So we have deliberately kept this category in the religion section . It was an unanimous decision on the part of our admission committee," Mamata Ray, principal of Bethune College told The Millennium Post.
This breakaway from religious-compulsions have not gone unnoticed by netizens who have wasted no time to upheld the college for its ground-breaking step.
"The new admission form of Bethune College in Kolkata includes 'Humanity' as a religion option for students to choose from. We still have so much to be proud of, and someday, there might not be a column on religion at all,”, a Facebook sharing the screenshot of the admission form posted.
Talking about religion as a mandatory in any form, On February 5th, Sneha Parthibaraja, a 35-year-old lawyer from Vellore became the first person in the country to win the right to not have any caste or religion associated with her identity after a long 9-year-old court battle.
