Just when you thought your thick wallets of cash are safer because it is replaced by ATM cards, this employee at Burger King happens. An employee at Burger King in Noida’s The Great India Place, identified as Sumit has been held for cloning of debit cards of customers on Monday, 11 February. TOI reports that this devious scheme has been taking place for over 3 months in which he is reported to have successfully retrieved card details of 500 victims.

The report also adds that the accused along with an accomplice, has over the course of time managed to steal over Rs. 50 lakhs. 

So, that makes us question, how was the fraud accomplished for over three months without going unnoticed?

To carry out the scheme, the fraudster is reported to have installed a device called a ‘skimmer’ to the card slot of the restaurant’s ATM machine which helps extract data stored on the card. As an employee he also had access to the security cameras which he exactly did, using the CCTV cameras placed at strategic points he would capture pin numbers which he then sold it to his accomplice for INR 10,000-15,000.

In this way, the duo managed to make clones of the cards and withdraw money from ATMs until he was finally caught on Monday. The whereabouts of his accomplice remain unknown.

Police officials from Noida Sector 39 have reportedly arrested the accused on Monday and are enquiring the accused about the remainder of the gang which may have been involved.
