Baby Saybie, dubbed the world’s smallest surviving baby is indeed a miracle baby. Born three months premature at just 23 weeks and three days, weighing in at just 8.6 ounces which is about the weight of a large apple five months ago a San Diego, California hospital, the baby, now five months old is a healthy baby and have been released from the hospital earlier this month weighing at 5.6 pounds.
The Sharp Mary Birch Hospital in San Diego, California released an official statement saying that, Baby Saybie was discharged home this month as a healthy 5-pound infant. A nurse who cared for Saybie as she battled for survival said her recovery and release earlier this month was a "miracle".
"After experiencing severe pregnancy complications, Saybie's mother gave birth via emergency cesarean section at 23 weeks, 3 days gestation in the womb," the hospital explained at a news conference. "Doctors said the preterm birth was necessary after they found that the baby was not gaining weight and her mother's life was at immediate risk."
‘I kept telling them: 'She's not going to survive. She's - I'm only 23 weeks [pregnant]',' Saybie's mother said in a video for Sharp Healthcare. 'It was the scariest day of my life’, Saybie's mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous said.
Saybie was deemed the world's smallest surviving newborn by the Tiniest Babies Registry that is maintained by the University of Iowa.
According to the hospital, she weighed 7 grams less than the previous smallest baby, who was born in Germany in 2015 who weighed 25 grams.
