Remembering Om Puri: The trailblazer who lit the cinematic skies with his films

Om Puri's sudden death came as a huge shock to his fans. The recipient of two national awards and two Filmfare Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award, he had a memorable film career, for over four decades. The Padma Shri awardee, studied at the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India. The legendary actor featured in films like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Mirch Masala and many others. Aakrosh, the 1980 arthouse film got the ‘Golden Peacock' for the Best Film at the International Film Festival of India. The film is in the list of 60 films that shaped the Indian film industry spanning six decades. Here is the list of Om Puri’s top five films.
Ardh Satya: In this acclaimed cop drama, the protagonist, played by Om Puri, is a policeman struggling with the evils around him and with his own frailties. The film also stars Amrish Puri, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah and Sadashiv Amrapurkar.
Arohan: The 1983 Shyam Benegal master piece saw Om Puri in the lead. The film won Om Puri National Film Award for the best actor.

City of Joy: It is a 1992 French-British drama film directed by Roland Joffé, with a screenplay by Mark Medoff. Based upon the novel by Dominique Lapierre, the film looks at poverty in the modern India, lives of the people in slums. Apart from Om Puri-Shabana Azmi the film also saw Patrick Swayze in a key role.
Maachis: A 1996 Indian Hindi period political thriller film directed by Gulzar and produced by R. V. Pandit. It starred Om Puri in the lead role. To this day, many songs from the film, particularly "Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale" and "Chhod Aaye Hum Vo Galiyaan" can be heard playing on FM radio or TV channels.
