In Teej, women neither eat anything nor drinks water for 24 hours. When compared Teej is more difficult than 'Karvachauth' as in the latter, women break their fast at moonrise.
On this auspicious day, women get up early and take a holy bath. They further dress up elegantly and visit the temple. They also observe Nirjala fast and cannot even consume water during their fast.
According to Hindu Calendar, Hartalika Teej 2016 is celebrated during Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada month. Hartalika Teej comes one month after Hariyali Teej and it is often celebrated one day before Ganesh Chaturthi. Hartalika Teej 2016 will be celebrated on Sunday. This Teej is known as Hartalika Teej due to the legend associated with it. Hartalika word is combination of “Harat” and “Aalika” which means “abduction” and “female friend” respectively. According to the legend of Hartalika Teej, the friend of Goddess Parvati took her to the thick forest so that her father can’t marry her to Lord Vishnu against her wish.
During Haritalika Teej women dress up like newly weds in colours like red and green and try to look their best to lure their husbands. They apply henna/mehendi and wear colourful bangles which are symbolism of a newly-wed bride.
As far as food goes, Ghevar, Dal Bati Churma, Besan Laddu, Kaju Katli and Sattu form an essential part of the celebrations.
