Shah was elected as an MLA from Sarkhej in four consecutive elections: 1997 (bye-election), 1998, 2002 and 2007.

Amit Shah is the current president of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Amit Shah is considered as a close aide of PM Narendra Modi.

Shah was the party's in-charge for Uttar Pradesh for 2014 general elections, BJP won 73 seats in the state. The success led to his anointment as party president.
