According to initial reports, the stampede happened in the city of Mina on 10th day of haj during the 'stoning of the devil' ritual.

This is not the first time a tragedy has struck Mecca. In 1990, the worst hajj-related tragedy claims the lives of 1,426 pilgrims in a stampede.

Then on September 11, 2015, 107 people were killed and scores wounded when a crane collapsed in bad weather.
