Monstrous traffic jam cripples Gurgaon

Thousands of commuters were stuck on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway for around 14 hours due to a massive traffic jam caused by heavy rains that left the Hero Honda Chowk inundated. People were stranded since Thursday evening and several vehicles ran out of fuel, reports said. The stranded passengers accused government of providing zero to little help. 'Visuals of traffic jam in Gurgaon. & we r made to believe 'Mera desh aage badh rha hai' Lolz no, it's still struck,' tweeted a commuter.

According to reports, several companies in Gurgaon have also asked their employees to work from home today.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the jam. Responding to a twitter question, the BJP leader said that he is ‘Frustrated by non-cooperation by Delhi Govt’.

The monstrous jam was cleared after the administration called an emergency meeting on Friday morning to tackle the situation.

Throughout the jam, the vehicles remained stuck especially on the Delhi-Jaipur stretch. There was several feet of waterlogging as the Badshahpur drain breached.

The Gurgaon Police issued an advisory on Twitter that said: “People coming to Gurgaon from Delhi are advised to stay back today to avoid being stuck in Traffic Jams due to flooding on roads.” Delhi Police also issued a similar advisory warning commuters from taking NH-8.

The local police took to twitter to keep the stranded passengers updated on the situation. The Gurgaon Police could be seen sharing information through the night till the morning.

The traffic nightmare came after heavy evening downpour on Thursday left thousands of people stranded. Many were seen abandoning their cars and wading through knee-deep water.

The District Magistrate directed that all schools in Gurugram will remain closed on July 29 and 30, in view of unprecedented rainfall.
