Sakshi Malik on Thursday scripted history by becoming the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal and has now become the fourth female athlete from country to climb to podium at the biggest sporting event in the world with a bronze medal finish at Rio Olympics 2016.

The 23-year-old from Haryana, a silver medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and bronze winner at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, earned a dramatic come-from-behind win over Kyrgysztan's Aisuluu  Tynybekova to script history. Sakshi Malik ended India’s wait for a medal at the Rio Olympic 2016 by clinching the bronze in the 58kg category, pulling off a sensational 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova in the Play-off bout, at Rio de Janerio on Thursday. Sakhsi became only the fourth woman athlete from India to win an Olympic medal.

Weight-lifter Karnam Malleshwari was the first Indian to win an Olympic medal for India when she won a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games.  She won the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Boxer Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, better known as Mary Kom won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics Games. She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.

Shuttler Saina Nehwal won a bronze at the 2012 London Games. She has won over twenty international titles including ten Super series titles. She was able to attain world no. 1 ranking in 2015.
