Five Air disasters which left the football world reeling

Over the years, there have been a number of plane crashes that have claimed the lives of a lot of football players. Some of these air disasters have even wiped out entire teams. An aeroplane which was carrying Brazilian professional football players has reportedly crashed in Colombia. The plane is said to be crashed at around 10:15pm local time in Cerro Gordo. 72 people were on board when the plane crashed enroute to Bolivia. Here we recall five of the most disastrous incidents where the entire team was wiped out.

1949 Superga air disaster

The Superga air disaster occurred on 4 May 1949, when a Fiat G.212 of Avio Linee Italiane (Italian Airlines), carrying the entire Torino football team (popularly known as the Grande Torino) crashed into the retaining wall at the back of the Basilica of Superga, which stands on the hill of Turin, with 31 victims.

1958 Munich air Disaster

On 6 February 1958, a charter plane carrying 44 people crashed after refuelling at Munich Airport. The accident claimed 23 lives, among them eight Manchester United players and three club officials.

1987 Alianza Lima air disaster

The 1987 Alianza Lima air disaster took place on 8 December 1987, when a Peruvian Navy Fokker F27-400M chartered by Peruvian football club Alianza Lima plunged into the Pacific Ocean six miles short of its destination, off the Ventanilla District of the city of Callao. Everybody except the pilot died.

1993 Zambia National Team Accident

The 1993 Zambia national football team air disaster occurred in the late evening of 27 April 1993 when a Zambian Air Force de Havilland Canada DHC-5D Buffalo (registration AF-319) crashed into the Atlantic Ocean about 500 metres (550 yards) offshore from Libreville, Gabon. All 25 passengers and five crew members were killed.
