The ICC World Cup 2019 ended with lots and lots of question raised over rules for ‘Super Over’ in the game. In the finals, both New Zealand and England scored 241 runs each but that not it, even the super-over ended in a tie. The winner of the game was then decided on the basis of number of boundaries smashed by each team. England was declared as the winner and this raised many eyebrows of cricket fans as how one team can be given World Cup trophy on the basis of boundaries count. Some of the former Indian cricketers gave their take on the same which are as follows:
Gautam Gambhir - "Don't understand how the game of such proportions, the #CWC19Final, is finally decided on who scored the most boundaries. A ridiculous rule @ICC. Should have been a tie. I want to congratulate both @BLACKCAPS & @englandcricket on playing out a nail biting Final. Both winners imo (sic)’’.
Mohammed Kaif - Difficult to digest this more boundary rule. Something like sudden death- continuous super overs till a result is a better solution. Understand, wanting a definite winner but sharing a trophy is better than deciding on more boundaries. Very tough on New Zealand.
Yuvraj Singh - I don’t agree with that rule ! But rules are rules congratulations to England on finally winning the World Cup, my heart goes out for the kiwis they fought till the end. Great game an epic final.
Harbhajan Singh – In cricket one run more or less decides winner then how can ICC make such irrelevant rules where winners are decided on the basis of boundaries count. In my opinion, both the teams should have been awarded the trophy, the Indian spinner said in a video available on Youtube.
Sachin Tendulkar - Speaking to 100mb, his official digital destination, he said, “I feel there should be another super over to decide the winner, instead of considering the number of boundaries scored by both teams. Not just in a World Cup final. Every game is important. Like in football, when teams go into extra time, nothing else matters.
