New Delhi:

Asteroids, if hit Earth, can bring massive destruction to our planet and also to human life. The effects of an asteroid strike—tsunamis, shock waves, and flattening winds, could be catastrophic. On Wednesday, three giant asteroids dubbed as '2019 OD', '2015 HM10' and '2019 OE' approached dangerously towards Earth. However, we were fortunate that the three huge space rocks did not collide with the Earth. Well, NASA had previously said that none of these 3 asteroids – Asteroid 2019 OD, Asteroid 2015 HM10 and Asteroid 2019 OE – posed a threat to Earth.

According to a report published by express.co.uk, 2019 OD, one of the three giant asteroids which was travelling at a speed of 42,926mph crossed the Earth’s orbits within 222,164 miles from the surface, this made it 16,736 miles closer than the Moon. Asteroid 2019 OD was 393 feet across in width at its widest point. The asteroid zoom past the Earth at around 7:01 pm (IST). Asteroid 2019 OD was spotted just three weeks ago.

In the meantime, 2015 HM10 reached 2.9 million miles from Earth at around 7:01 pm (IST). On the other hand, 2019 OE reached 600,494 miles from Earth at around 8:05 pm (IST). It is worth mentioning here that these two other asteroids also travelled at breakneck speeds. The 2015 HM10, which was 361ft wide, was clocking at 21,273mph while 2019 OE which was a smaller 170ft across reached 20,244mph.

CNN reported that in June this year, astronomers showed that advancement in telescopes could be able to warn people about an impending asteroid strike on our planet and given ample time for evacuation from affected areas. A team at the University of Hawaii detected asteroid named ‘2019 MO’, which was just 13 feet in diameter before it entered the Earth’s atmosphere. The space rock got within 310,685 miles from Earth.

Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Although asteroids orbit the Sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets. Though, asteroids can be extremely dangerous for the Earth and for human kinds too. The asteroids approach towards the Earth due to the gravitational forces that affect them.

According to a report of spacetelescope.org, there are more than 7 lakh asteroids that have been found in space. It further added that asteroids are mainly found in an area called the ‘main belt’, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
