Chandrayaan-II India set to launch second mission to moon in 2018

New Delhi:

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (IC) for Atomic Energy and Space announced on Monday that India’s space mission to moon, ‘Chandrayaan-II’ is set to take place in 2018.

He made these comments while addressing the inaugural session of the 5-day Asian Conference on Remote Sensing at Delhi. Dr. Singh claimed that India has today emerged as the world's frontline nation in the field of Space Technology. 

The five-day conference is being attended by over 500 delegates, including leading space scientists from around the world. Singh further gave credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for breathing new life into local space research and arranging brainstorming sessions between space scientists and the different governmental departments and ministries.

He further praised PM Modi for realising his pet project of a South Asian satellite which would be also providing inputs and benefits to the neighbouring countries.

ISRO Chief AS Kiran Kumar who was the Guest of Honour at the inaugral session, outlined the various measures taken by ISRO to support disaster management across the nation.

India’s first mission to moon, Chandrayaan-1, was launched successfully on 22 October 2008 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The satellite made more than 3400 orbits around the moon and was concluded on 29 August 2009 when Chandrayaan-1 lost communication with Earth.
