'March for Science': Scientists to take to the streets across India

New Delhi:

Scientists across the country will pave a peculiar way to defend the vital role science plays in our society through 'India March for Science' on Wednesday.

The rally mirrors the global march held earlier this on April 22, which was attended by over a million people from 600 cities. The scientists, researchers and acamedicians will fight for at least 3% of India’s GDP towards scientific and technological research and 10% towards education along with a share in policy-making on evidence-based science.

It is being organised in the light of ending “unscientific, obscurantist ideas and religious intolerance”, ensuring that only proof-based ideas are being delivered to the educational institutions.

“We note with deep concern that financial support to even premier institutions like IITs, NITs, and IISERs has been slashed. Universities are facing shortage of funds to adequately support scientific research. Research funding agencies like DST, DBT and CSIR are reportedly impacted by reduced governmental support. Scientists in government laboratories are being asked to generate a part of their salary by selling their inventions and from other sources”, scientists asserted in an appeal.

More than 3,000 scientists across the country have signed the petition and protests will be held in 27 cities and towns across the country.
