The Indian Space Research Centre (ISRO) on Wednesday successfully launched Radar Imaging Satellite RISAT-2BR1 onboard PLSV-C48 at 3.25 PM from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It is to be noted that the countdown for the launch of PLSV-C48 had begun at 4.40 PM on Tuesday. Placed into an orbit of 576 km, the Indian satellite will have a life of five year.
Along with RISAT-2BR1, PLSV-C48 is carrying nine other commercial foreign satellites from the USA (multi-mission Lemur-4 satellites, technology demonstration Tyvak-0129, earth imaging 1HOPSAT), Israel (remote sensing Duchifat-3), Italy (search and rescue Tyvak-0092) and Japan (QPS-SAR - a radar imaging earth observation satellite).

Today’s launch marked a significant milestone for the space agency as it is the 50th flight of the PSLV and also the 75th vehicle mission from Sriharikota. The satellite is meant for applications in various fields like agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.

Last month ISRO launched CARTOSAT 3 satellite on November 27which was a third-generation satellite having high-resolution imaging capability. This was OSRO’s second launch after Chandrayaan 2 in July. CARTOSAT 3 carried along 13 other commercial nanosatellites from the US into Sun Synchronous orbit.
