April 2: Reliving India's jubilious 2011 World Cup triumph

April 2nd will always remain a special day for Indian cricket fans as six years ago in 2011, Team India under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni clinched the ICC World Cup after a gap of 28 years.

Chasing a daunting 275 against Sri Lanka in the title clash, India rode on outstanding performances from Gautam Gambhir (97) and Dhoni (91*) to win the match by 6 wickets in front of a packed Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The win was sealed in fantastic fashion a six by MS Dhoni.

India recorded the highest successful run-chase in a World Cup final and became the first team to lift the trophy on home soil.

Dhoni’s six off Nuwan Kulasekara to win the match triggered massive celebrations throughout the country and across the globe, which continued till the wee hours of the night as India brought the Cup back home.

India had made their way into the final on the back of a historic and memorable win over Pakistan in the semi-final and in the title decider, were forced to bring in S Sreesanth after Ashish Nehra injured his finger. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, played without Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath.
