Google dedicates Doodle to Dilip Sardesai on his 78th birth anniversary

New Delhi:

Google on Wednesday is celebrating the 78th birth anniversary of former Indian cricketer Dilip Sardesai by honouring him with a Google Doodle. Sardesai, often regarded as India’s finest talent against spin bowling made his name in cricket while playing the inter-university Rohinton Baria Trophy in 1959-60, where he smashed 435 runs at a remarkable average of 87.

Dilip Sardesai made 87 runs in his first-class debut for Indian Universities against the visiting Pakistan team at Pune in 1960-61. He scored a brilliant knock of 202 against Madras University around the same time and was called up to represent Bombay in the Ranji Trophy.

He had scored over 1,000 first-class runs in three domestic season, which includes his highest score of 222 against Indian Starlets in the final of Moin-Ud-Dowlah Gold Cup Tournament.

Sardesai was included in the Indian Cricket Cricketers of the Year list in 1960-61.

The elegant batsman breathed his last on 2 July 2007 following his admission in Bombay Hospital on 23 June due to a chest infection.

Sardesai’s wife Nandini is a member of the Indian Censor Board for motion pictures and his son Rajdeep Sardesai, a prominent journalist. His daughter Shonali is a senior scientist at the World Bank, Washington.
