New Delhi:

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been fined by the BCCI Ombudsman DK Jain for their controversial comments on the show Koffee With Karan hosted by Bollywood director Karan Johar at the start of 2019. The Ombudsman has directed Pandya and Rahul to pay Rs one lakh each to families of 10 constables in the para-military forces who have lost their lives on duty. In addition, the Ombudsman has also directed the duo to pay Rs 10 lakh in the fund created by Cricket Association for the Blind (CABI), for promotion of blind cricket within four weeks. The BCCI Ombudsman also said that if the amount is not deposited within four weeks, the BCCI can deduct the amounts from the match fees which are payable to them.

Pandya and Rahul's situation came to light hen Johar was asking questions about not asking women’s name in a night club and what do men talk about. To this, Pandya replied, “I like to watch and observe how they (women) move. I'm little from the black side so I need to see how they move." Pandya also boasted about how he casually discussed his sex life with his parents. “When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, 'Main karke aya hai aaj (I had sex today)'. At a party my parents asked me 'acha tera wala (women) kaun sa hai [who is your interest here?] so I said yeh, yeh, yeh (pointing out women)' and they were like 'waah proud of you beta',” Pandya replied with laughter.

Pandya's remarks were slammed as ‘misogynistic’, ‘racist’ by many Twitter users and the BCCI issued a show-cause notice to the all-rounder along with Rahul, the other cricketer present on the show. Pandya took to Twitter to apologise for his remarks and expressed ‘regret’ over the comments when he responded to the show cause notice. The all-rounder said the mistake will not be repeated in the future.

Even skipper Virat Kohli distanced himself from the remarks before the start of the ODI series against Australia. “From the Indian cricket team point of view, any inappropriate comments that are made in that scenario are something that we definitely don't support. We definitely as the Indian cricket team do not support views like that and that has been communicated (to the two players). I can definitely say that as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers we definitely don't align with those views and those are purely individual views. The two concerned players (have) felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what's happened. Definitely, it has to hit anyone hard, they will definitely understand the things that have not gone right. We are still waiting for a decision to be made,” Kohli said.

Pandya and KL Rahul's suspension was lifted on January 2019 by the Committee of Administrators pending a probe. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) had wanted the Supreme Court to appoint an Ombudsman to decide the fate of the two players. Pandya joined the team in New Zealand while Rahul played for India A in the home series against England Lions. Both players have been included in the 15-man World Cup squad, with the tournament beginning on May 30 in England.
