New Delhi:

Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl in Wellington but Tim Seifert and Colin Munro stitched a solid stand at the top to boost New Zealand. Seifert found the boundary on a regular basis and smashed 84 off 43 balls, his highest individual score. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor also smashed some valuable knocks as New Zealand reached 219/6, the joint second-highest total for a side in this format against India. In response, India never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner picked up wickets as India suffered their heaviest defeat in terms of runs in this format as New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. (SCORECARD)

That is all from us here. Join us on February 8 for the second match.

Kane Williamson, New Zealand skipper: One of the complete performances you search for. Seifert was excellent. The bowling performance was outstanding.

Rohit Sharma, India captain says: We were outplayed in all three departments actually. We always knew 200 is not going to be an easy chase. We kept losing wickets, that kept throwing us out of the game. We have chased 200-run targets in the past. But when you don't have a good partnership while chasing big totals, it's always tough

Tim Seifert is the Man of the Match. He says, "It feels great to go up the order, look at the first two overs and then go from there and put pressure on the bowlers. I have been selected for a reason and it feels nice to have backed my ability."

With this loss, Rohit's run of seven successive wins as captain has also come to an end. MS Dhoni did it twice.

India's 80-run loss is their worst in Twenty20 Internationals and it is fitting, in a way, that New Zealand, the team they have struggled most in this format, has dished it out to them.

All over! Daryl Mitchell takes the final wicket as New Zealand thrash India by 80 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Tim Southee gets the wicket of MS Dhoni for 39 and New Zealand are one wicket away from a big win.

Ferguson gets the wicket of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and it is all over bar the shouting.

Krunal Pandya falls for 20 thanks to a well-directed short ball from Tim Southee but India need a required rate of over 30.

Another good over from Lockie Ferguson as New Zealand close in on a big win. India will have to wait till February 8 to break their jinx in New Zealand.

Krunal Pandya slams a six but India need 107 off 30 balls. Someone of AB de Villiers' calibre can achieve this. But, he got a hundred off just 31 balls.

Dhoni slams a six and ruins Santner's figures as he ends with figures of 4-0-24-2. India need 123 off 36 balls

The asking rate is mounting and the game has probably slipped away from India. Too much for MS Dhoni to do probably.

Ish Sodhi gets his second wicket in the over as Hardik Pandya carves a full and flighted delivery to deep extra cover and Daryl Mitchell takes the catch close to the boundary.

Dinesh Karthik falls as he slog sweeps to deep midwicket but Tim Southee dives to his right to take a smart catch. Dhoni and Hardik Pandya the key now.

The asking rate has mounted and it might become a bit too much for MS Dhoni to accomplish.

Santner you beauty! Gets the two big wickets and India are in trouble now. Faster and full and Rishabh Pant misjudges the line to be cleaned up while Vijay Shankar misuces the lofted shot to be caught at long off by Colin de Grandhomme. India need a miracle from MS Dhoni.

Vijay Shankar hits another six off Mitchell Santner while Daryl Mitchell has started well.

Brilliant stuff from Lockie Ferguson and Dhawan is cleaned up by a yorker on leg stump which hits the pads and crashes onto the stumps. Dhawan falls for an enterprising 29.

Kugglejin continues to leak runs as Vijay Shankar slams two boundaries and a six as India continue to make solid progress. Both Dhawan and Shankar are ensuring India are keeping up with the run-rate.

Lockie Ferguson is bowling at over 145 kmph but Dhawan slams his third six by clobbering a short ball to the deep midwicket fence.

WICKET! Superb stuff from Tim Southee. Short ball and he miscues the pull shot, Ferguson dives forward at deep square leg and takes a fine catch.

Two sixes and a four by Shikhar Dhawan off Scott Kugglejin and India have made a fast start. This wicket has plenty of runs in the offering.

Tim Southee gets some swing and Shikhar Dhawan struggles to cope with it. There is an appeal for a catch there is no bat involved.

India face an uphill task as New Zealand reach 219/6, the joint-second highest score in Twenty20 Internationals against India.

Mitchell Santner ends the innings in style as New Zealand finish on 219/6, the joint-second highest total against India in Twenty20 Internationals. India have a tall task on hand.

Two fours and a six by Kugglejin off Bhuvneshwar and New Zealand are ending on a high. This will be a tall task for India.

Two boundaries by Scott Kugglejin off Bhuvneshwar and New Zealand bring up 200 for the first time in this format against India. Superb stuff.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets the vital wicket of Taylor as the batsman walks across and mistimes the slog across the line and Khaleel Ahmed at backward square leg takes the catch.

Superb catch from Mohammed Siraj. Colin de Grandhomme mistimes a full toss from Hardik Pandya and Siraj takes a brilliant catch near the boundary.

Taylor slams a full ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the deep extra cover fence as New Zealand near 200. With just three overs remaining, India will need a special effort.

A brilliant catch from Dinesh Karthik ends Daryl Mitchell's debut as he takes a good catch in the boundary but Kane Williamson's innings is cut short as Hardik Pandya takes the catch off Yuzvendra Chahal.

Some sharp fielding from Krunal Pandya saves a couple of runs for India but Kane Williamson piles on the agony with two sixes off Hardik as New Zealand look to reach 200.

No century for Seifert as he is cleaned up by Khaleel Ahmed for a brilliant 84 but Daryl Mitchell, the debutant gets going with a boundary.

Tim Seifert hits a four and a six off Chahal as New Zealand race to 127/1 in 12 overs. Can this be a special moment for Seifert?

Two sixes by Tim Seifert and he is nearing a century. Dinesh karthik puts down a difficult chance as India continue to suffer.

Seifert continues to punish India as he slams a boundary off Yuzvendra Chahal. The hosts are nearing 100 at the half-way stage.

Tim Seifert manages to score his maiden fifty but Krunal Pandya removes Colin Munro as the left-hander mistimes the lofted shot straight to long on with Vijay Shankar taking an easy catch.

New Zealand are hitting a boundary every over as the run-rate is over 10. Seifert and Munro are nearing fifties.

MS Dhoni drops a chance off Tim Seifert and Krunal Pandya is the unlucky bowler. Next ball, he gets hammered for a six. New Zealand have gone past fifty in the fifth over.

16 runs in the fourth over but it is a good comeback from Khaleel after being hit for two consecutive sixes.

Munro now joins in the act as he blasts two consecutive sixes off Khaleel. New Zealand have made a fast start and India are under pressure.

After a solid start, New Zealand target Bhuvneshwar with Tim Seifert blasting a six over long on and a four off Bhuvneshwar as the bowler concedes 15 runs in his second over.

Khaleel Ahmed starts poorly as Munro blasts two boundaries, one past mid off and the other straight down the ground. Khaleel, though, bounces back in style with three dots but New Zealand get nine runs in the second over.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar concedes just four runs in the first over as New Zealand get off to a slow start.

Tim Seifert and Colin Munro are at the crease with Bhuvneshwar Kumar opening the bowling. Can Munro, who has smashed the second-most number of tons in Twenty20 Internationals, fire after an underwhelming show in the ODIs?

So Daryl Mitchell makes his debut for New Zealand. Did you know that his father was once a coach for the legendary All Blacks, the greatest Rugby team on this planet? Here is his profile.

Here are the playing XIs of both the teams

New Zealand: Colin Munro, Tim Seifert(w), Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, Daryl Mitchell, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson

India have chosen to bowl in the first Twenty20 International against New Zealand in Wellington.

It will be interesting to see how the teams approach the Twenty20 Internationals. The main focus will be on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and the next ODI will be in a couple of weeks.

In 2009, India lost both the Twenty20 Internationals by close margins in their tour of New Zealand. The Cake Tin saw them achieving glory in the ODIs. Can they break the jinx here in the shortest format as well?

India women had kept New Zealand women down to 159/4 despite an attacking fifty from Sophie Devine. India started off like a train with Smriti Mandhana slamming a fifty off 24 balls but New Zealand fought back and India collapsed like a pack of cards to lose the first game by 23 runs. Here is hoping that the men's team do not suffer a similar fate.

A warm welcome to the first Twenty20 International between India and New Zealand at the Cake Tin. The Men's team will be hoping to break their jinx as they look to win a T20I for the first time in New Zealand, having lost 0-2 in 2009. However, sad news for Indian cricket fans as the women's side suffer a dramatic collapse to lose by 23 runs despite Smriti Mandhana's fifty off 24 balls.
