New Delhi:

Terror struck in the form of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, as they tore England into pieces during a first innings that lasted just 20.4 overs in the opening session of the first Test in Auckland on Thursday.

England were 27 for 9, struggling to save their lowest Test innings of 45 against Australia in 1887, but their last wicket partnership saved that feat before getting bundled for a paltry 58.

Pacer Trent Boult ripped out the top order with the figures of five for nine after his first seven overs, later finishing with six for 32. His new-ball partner Tim Southee claimed four wickets for 25.

With a pinch of green grass on a hard wicket, precision swing and seam bowling by the Kiwi pair destroyed the English team, who were batting first after losing the toss.

A total of five batsmen departed for ducks, leaving the ground red-faced. Skipper Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad all were part of the day’s duck squad.

The last wicket partnership of 31 runs between Craig Overton and James Anderson saved England from ultimate blush as they both helped them cross the 50-run mark.

With the moisture gone from the pitch, this Test match could be a very tough one to bear for England.
