When it comes to Bangladesh cricket and historic milestones, Shakib Al Hasan has featured very prominently. The Bangladesh all-rounder, considered to be one of the greatest all-rounders in the modern era, has amassed plenty of records in his playing career and he achieved one more milestone during Bangladesh’s win over West Indies in the first Test in Chittagong which ended on Saturday. The 64-run win by Bangladesh was their first in home Tests against West Indies and during the course of the match, Shakib created another world record for an all-rounder.

When Shakib dismissed Kieran Powell for a first-ball duck, Shakib became the quickest all-rounder to achieve the double of 3000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests. The left-hander achieved it in just 54 Tests, surpassing the previous record set by legendary England all-rounder Ian Botham, who had taken 55 Tests for this record. The other players to have achieved this double in quick time are Chris Cairns of New Zealand in 58 Tests, Andrew Flintoff in 69 Tests and India’s Kapil Dev, who achieved the feat in 73 Tests.

Shakib has been part of numerous milestones in Bangladesh’s cricketing history. He is the only Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul against every Test-playing nation while he is the only player in the team to take 200 wickets in Tests. His tally of 3727 runs puts him third in the all-time list of runs for Bangladesh players, behind Mushfiqur Rahim (3992) and Tamim Iqbal (4049). Shakib is only the third Bangladesh player to hit a double century in Tests, with Rahim (219, 200) and Tamim (206) being the others.
The left-hander is also in an elite club when it comes to bowling. His record of a five-wicket haul against every nation makes him only the fourth bowler in the world to achieve this feat, behind Muttiah Muralitharan, Dale Steyn and Rangana Herath. Shakib is only the fourth all-rounder to score a 100 and take 10 wickets in a match, which he achieved against Zimbabwe in Khulna in 2014.
In the last couple of seasons, Shakib has been plagued by a career-threatening finger injury on his left hand which ruled him out of the Asia Cup. An emergency procedure was carried out to remove the pus from his injured finger but an infection ruled him out of action for at least three months at the time. His injury has required surgery but Shakib has said it won’t be possible to conduct the procedure for at least six months, with Bangladesh keen to impress in the 2019 World Cup which will be held in England in May 2019.
