New Delhi:

Nathan Lyon has taken 16 wickets in the two Tests against India. The Australian offspinner has dismissed Virat Kohli the most number of times in Tests with seven and he has received immense praise from Sachin Tendulkar. Lyon’s haul of 5/67 and 3/39 on a pitch which assisted the fast bowlers immensely at the new Perth stadium won him plenty of admirers and cemented his reputation as one of the best spin bowlers in the world. However, there is one person who is absolutely fuming with the performance of Kohli and the Indian cricket team in Perth. Sourav Ganguly, who was a magnificent player of spin, has a clear message to the Indian cricket team and revealed in a chat that he was about to send an angry SMS to Kohli but did not do it.

“I wanted to tell him that you shouldn’t give so many wickets to spinners outside the subcontinent. There is no doubt that Nathan Lyon is a great spinner but so were Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Graeme Swann,” Ganguly told in a chat with India TV.

The left-hander, who has scored over 10,000 ODI runs and 8000 Test runs, had a clear message for Kohli’s Indian cricket team and that was to adopt an attacking approach. “They have shown him too much respect by defending a lot of deliveries outside the off-stump. They should look to build towards a total at least in excess of 300-350,” Ganguly said.

The former India skipper, who had captained the side to a 1-1 draw during India’s tour of Australia in 2003/04, added he was not happy with the performance of many batsmen in the team, some of whom are traveling Down Under for the second time since the 2014/15 series which India lost 0-2.

“They have been there before. Logically their game should improve over the years but from what we saw in Perth, it is difficult to say it has. Barring Kohli and (Cheteshwar) Pujara, none of them are making a lot of runs and this is not good for the team. If India has to win, they will have to do a lot more,” Ganguly added.

India will be taking on Australia in the third Test starting on Boxing Day in Melbourne. In the last encounter between both the sides in 2014, Virat Kohli scored a magnificent century and shared a brilliant partnership with Ajinkya Rahane but Australia managed to hold on for a draw and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
