  • Pakistan will play five ODIs against Australia starting on March 22.

New Delhi:

Umar Akmal is currently having a rejuvenation when it comes to his Pakistan fortunes. The right-hander, who is the younger brother of Kamran Akmal and the older brother of Adnan Akmal, has been in good form for the Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing Pakistan Super League Twenty20 tournament. His performances have earned him a spot in the Pakistan national team for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Australia which begin on March 22. However, there are some areas where the Akmals make comical blunders which make them a laughing stock. Kamran always made the news due to his shoddy wicketkeeping while Umar has often been a butt of jokes on social media.

In one such social media interaction, Umar was once again in the news when he made a massive blunder regarding India and Pakistan. In the video that has gone viral, Umar made the ultimate mistake of stating that the next IPL, instead of PSL, would be played in the country. This is what Umar exactly said, “Zaahir si baat hai Quetta ki team Karachi aayi hui hai aur hum apne home ground pe khel rahe hain, aur crowd jitna bhi support karega hamari team ko, team utna accha perform karegi. Aur crowd issi tarike se har team ko support karega toh agla IPL sorry PSL yahin pe hoga (Our team Quetta is here in Karachi and we are playing on our home ground. More the support from the crowd, better the team will perform. And if the crowd supports every team like this, the next IPL sorry PSL will be held here)."

This is not the first time that Umar Akmal had a tough time on social media. A couple of months ago, Umar was pronounced dead by social media and he had to take to his official Twitter handle to announce that he is safe.

On February 27, a day after Indian Air Force's strike on JeM terrorists inside its territory, Pakistan had closed its airspace for commercial flights and indefinitely suspended flight operations at many of its major airports. The closure of Pakistan’s airspace in response to escalating tensions with India disrupted major routes between Europe and South East Asia and left thousands of air travellers worldwide stranded.

The tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pulwama terror attack which killed 40 CRPF jawans continues to simmer and this has affected the Pakistan Super League, the nation’s Twenty20 tournament. In a statement by the Pakistan Cricket Board, it said, “Eight Pakistan-leg matches of Pakistan Super League will be played at National Stadium in Karachi due to a situation beyond PCB’s control. It also resulted in a tweak to Pakistan-leg matches, which will now commence from 9 March with all 8 matches to be played in as many days. Decision has been made following delayed opening of Lahore airspace for commercial flights, which has created substantial operational & logistical challenges relating to the delivery of the three Lahore matches, which were originally scheduled for 9, 10 & 12 March.”
