Virat Kohli became the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record

New Delhi:

Virat Kohli continued to break records and create history as he became the fastest batsman in ODI history to reach 10,000 ODI runs, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record. While Tendulkar reached the landmark in 259 innings, the Indian skipper achieved it in just 205 innings.

Kohli reached the landmark in the 37th over of the Indian innings when he drove Ashley Nurse to the mid-on fence. He became the fifth Indian and 13th player overall to reach this club. After reaching the milestone, Kohli effortlessly smashed his 37th century with a drive off Marlon Samuels in the 44th over. The significance of the milestone was not lost on Kohli, who pointed to his bat after getting to the ton.

The records continued to flow for Kohli, who went past 1000 runs in 2018 with a six off debutant Obed McCoy. This was the sixth time in 10 years that he has gone past 1000 runs in a calendar year in ODIs. Things got better for the Indian skipper as he smashed his fourth 150+ score in ODIs to help India end on 321/6.

However, it was not easy going for Kohli after winning the toss and opting to bat. The right-hander survived a dropped chance on 44 when he miscued a slower ball from debutant Obed McCoy to long off only for skipper Jason Holder to drop the catch.

This was not the only record that Kohli broke in the match. He surpassed Tendulkar’s mark of most runs in ODIs against West Indies, going past 1573 runs. In the process, he also reached 4000 runs in ODIs in India, reaching the mark in just 78 innings as compared to Tendulkar’s 92.

Run-scoring machine

Kohli’s record in Vizag is simply remarkable, with four fifty scores and two centuries in his six ODIs that he has played at the venue. The Indian skipper already holds the record for the fastest to 8000 and 9000 runs respectively.

The Indian skipper has enjoyed a remarkable 2018 in both Tests and ODIs, scoring over 1000 runs. In ODIs this year, he averages well over 100 with a strike-rate also in three figures. The list of records that Kohli holds is huge, including being the only Indian to hit a century on World Cup debut as well as the fastest century by an Indian batsman, which came off 52 balls against Australia in Jaipur 2013.

Looking at the amount of runs he regularly scores, the term consistency might well be synonymous with Kohli.
