New Delhi:

India vs Pakistan in a World Cup, or for that matter, any ICC event is considered a marquee contest. Millions of fans from both sides use this match to display their patriotism, jingoism and nationalistic fervour. With such a tense rivalry due to the historical tensions shared between the two countries, it is obvious that there will be a moment on the field that will be tense, comical or neither. India and Pakistan squared off for the first time in 1992 in Sydney and since then, India has held the upper hand against their arch-rivals by winning all six encounters till 2015. Here is looking at a memorable moment from each World Cup between India and Pakistan since 1992.

1992: When Kiran More had Javed Miandad ‘hopping’ mad in Sydney

The first clash between India and Pakistan saw sparks fly in the middle of the Sydney Cricket Ground in the 1992 World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 54 and a 26-ball 35 from Kapil Dev helped India reach 216/7 in 49 overs. One over was cut due to rain. In response, Pakistan was wobbling at 17/2. Javed Miandad and Aamer Sohail set about rebuilding the partnership and they had made good progress. However, with the asking rate mounting, the pressure was immense.

In the 26th over bowled by Tendulkar, Miandad attempted to glance the ball to fine leg and missed it. More appealed vehemently but the decision was not out. When Tendulkar was about to bowl the next ball, Miandad pulled away and exchanged words with Kiran More. Miandad tried to take a single but was sent back and More whipped the bails off as the throw came quickly. More appealed for a run-out. This did not amuse Miandad who leapt extravagantly with his bat held up in his hands, apparently mocking More.

The distraction appeared to have worked. Miandad was bowled by Javagal Srinath for 40 and when Sohail fell for 62 to Tendulkar, Pakistan collapsed in a heap and lost by 43 runs. The stage was set for an epic rivalry, not so much in terms of runs, but in terms of drama on the field. The clash between More and Miandad was the first symbolic showdown between India and Pakistan on the cricket field. Although India crashed out in the league stages and Pakistan won the World Cup, India had their moment by beating their arch-rivals.
