Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the match against Afghanistan on Saturday, ANI news agency reported. The Indian skipper was found guilty of breaching Article 2.1 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to “excessive appealing during an international match".

During the India vs Afghanistan match, Kohli was desperately looking for early wickets and Mohammed Shami did provide a chance but was ruled out by third umpire as the ball had slightly pitched outside line.

With scorecard reading 6/0, Shami almost trapped Hazratullah Zazai in front of the wicket. However, the on-field umpire was not convinced and Kohli had to seek third umpire’s intervention.

However, the replay showed that the on-field was right not to raise his finger and the ball had pitched slightly outside the leg. The Indian skipper was not happy loosing DRS early in the innings and argued with the umpire for a moment. He was later seen pleading with his folded hands.

Kohli admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, and as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Kohli, for whom it was the second offence since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016. Kohli now has two demerit points after having got one demerit point during the Pretoria Test against South Africa on 15 January 20.
