New Delhi:

Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka defeated Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals of the 2017 Australian Open to secure a berth in the semifinals on Tuesday.

The Swiss tennis ace registered an impressive straight set 7-6,6-4,6-3 win over his French opponent. Wawrinka now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal match between Roger Federer and M Zverev.

It is the third occasion Wawrinka, seeded fourth, has made at least the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

Speaking about his fellow Swiss tennis mate's run in the Australian Open, Wawrinka said, "[Federer is] playing so well," Wawrinka said. "We are all so happy to see him back on the court. Yes, I will watch the match, of course. I'll take a nice dinner in front of the match."

It was Wawrinka's fourth consecutive win over the Frenchman. "I started to move a little bit better, more aggressive from the first shot," Wawrinka said. "I think that made a big difference. "I'm playing really well. Playing in the semifinal here is always special. I won my first Grand Slam here."
