World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova was stunned by American CoCo Vandeweghe in the US Open quarter-final match on Wednesday. After a long time, US making their presence felt in women's singles event of a grand slam.

Three of the four semi-finalists are Americans - Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens and CoCo Vandeweghe. Europe's long domination at premier tennis tournaments has been halted for once.

In the absence of their 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams, this is a major accomplishment by the Americans in the US Open.
