New Delhi:

The New Year might have begun badly for the Australian cricket team as the draw in the rain-affected Test in Sydney resulted in Virat Kohli’s side winning a Test series Down Under for the first time ever. The Australian team is looking for solutions to bring back the good times. Ahead of the ODI in Sydney against India, the team has found a unique solution to bring back excitement in the camp. The team has gone back in time. Back to the 80s in fact. Before the start of the series, the Australian cricket team donned a retro 80s jersey, in a tribute to Allan Border’s side who donned the same kind of jersey albeit with a lesser shade of yellow in the 1986 period.

Speaking to Cricket Australia’s official website, Peter Siddle, who last played an ODI against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2010, said he was excited with the New jerseys. “We found out the other day we were going to be in it, so the boys were a bit excited to get their pack and open up and check it out. Everyone is impressed. I might just pull out the headband. I’ll have to ask Zamps (Adam Zampa) to borrow one of his and go with the DK (Lillee) headband. We’ll see what we pull out on Saturday.”

The Australian cricket jersey has undergone some changes ever since they started wearing coloured clothing in the era of Pyjama cricket which was played during the Kerry Packer series. From the light yellow jersey in the 80, Australia adopted a golden yellow cricket kit for the 1992 World Cup which was hosted for the first time in Australia. Following that series, Australia had the standard golden yellow jersey without too many designs.

In the 1999 World Cup, Australia had green stars over the yellow jersey while in 2003, a greener shade was incorporated into the jersey. As the first decade of the 21st century went on, a golden green shade was witnessed for the home series involving the Australian team. In the 2015 World Cup, Australia once again donned a total yellow jersey as they won the title for the fifth time.

This latest jersey is another addition to Australia’s ever-changing jersey code, with a new one potentially scheduled for the 2019 World Cup which will be held in England.
