New Delhi:

Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the first ODI in Sydney. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up his 100th wicket by removing Aaron Finch while Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Alex Carey. Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh slammed fifties but both could not carry on. Peter Handscomb played some attacking cricket and notched up his second fify and a late burst from Marcus Stoinis helped Australai reach a good score. The hosts blasted 93 runs in the last 10 overs to help them reach a great score. In response, Virat Kohli's side got off to a disastrous start as they lost three wickets for four runs but a partnership of 138 runs between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma kept India in the hunt. Dhoni's 68th fifty and Rohit's record 22nd century was the key as India stayed in the contest but once Rohit fell cheaply, India lost the initiaitve and lost the game by 34 runs as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. (SCORECARD)

It is all over. Australia have won the game by 34 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Rohit Sharma's 133 kept Virat Kohli's side in the hunt but once he was dismissed, India could not gain momentum.

Rohit Sharma has now hit the most sixes against a single opposition as he keeps India in the game. However, Ravindra Jadeja falls for 8 and Australia are now into the tail.

Rohit Sharma hits yet another six and shatters a record in the process. India are still staying in the hunt.

Nathan Lyon concedes just four runs in the 41st over. Good over and the pressure mounts.

Rohit and Dinesh Karthik are struggling to get going as Behrendorff and Jhye Richardson maintain a tight line and length. The asking rate has gone over 10.

Jason Behrendorff has claimed a massive wicket of MS Dhoni for 51 as he is trapped in front with a delivery that zips back in. That is a big, big blow and unfortunately, India do not have reviews. The ball was pitching outside the line of leg stump.

Dhoni slams his 68th fifty and the crowd erupt in Sydney. He has finally come good and this might shut the critics up for some time now.

Rohit smashes his fourth six as he continues to tear into the Australian bowling. This is wonderful batting and one feels India have the advantage.

Rohit Sharma is finding the gaps with perfection. He is nearing a century and Dhoni is also giving him valuable support.

Rohit Sharma slams his 38th fifty and Dhoni comes close to his half-century as Glenn Maxwell concedes two boundaries in his first over.

Dhoni hits the first boundary of the innings and he almost survives a catch off Stoinis as he miscues the pull shot off Siddle.

Yet another six by Rohit Sharma, his third and his six-hitting ability against Australia continues. The partnership between Dhoni and Rohit has gone past fifty. The rejuvenation is on for India.

So far, 16 overs are up and the asking rate is hovering near seven. The odd thing is: There have been three sixes in the entire innings but no boundaries. This partnership is vital for the Indian side.

Rohit Sharma hits a six off Peter Siddle while Dhoni finally gets going with a six off Nathan Lyon. That is a way to break the shackles. Dhoni, in particular, has played a slow knock with six runs off 35 balls.

Australia have totally dominated the powerplay and India will have to do a massive rebuilding job if they have to stay in contention.

Rohit Sharma gets off the mark with a massive six off Jason Behrendorff. India need more hits from him.

Disastrous start for India. Australia have reached 288/5 and India have started in disastrous fashion. Shikhar Dhawan is LBW to Jason Behrendorff while Jhye Richardson took two wickets of Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu cheaply. India are in deep trouble at 4/3 after four overs.

Peter Handscomb is dropped by Ambati Rayudu but he falls next ball as he holes to Shikhar Dhawan at deep cover. Ends a magnificent knock of 73 and India have taken a wicket at the right time.

Kuldeep's figures take a big hit as he concedes two sixes, one off Stoinis and other of Handscomb. He ends with figures of 10-0-54-2 but Handscomb has notched up his second ODI fifty. Timely knock and Australia will be hoping to get a target in range of 280-290.

Marcus Stoinis is a hard-hitting batsman but surprising that Glenn Maxwell has not come out to bat. He could have made a big difference in the batting.

WICKET! Marsh has thrown it away. He has not made it count. Marsh miscued the lofted drive and holes out to Mohammed Shami at long on. Ends a good knock but he has fallen at a wrong time.

Fifty for Shaun Marsh. It has been a splendid knock from the left-hander who is currently facing tremendous pressure for his poor show in the Tests. Can he make it count?

Handscomb breaks the shackles by drilling a cover drive to the deep extra cover fence and Bhuvneshwar Kumar cannot stop it despite a dive.

WICKET! Ravindra Jadeja breaks the dangerousd stand and Khawaja has been trapped LBW for 59. The flatter ball and it spins back in slightly, Khawaja misses the sweep and is rapped on the pads. The umpire gives it out and Australia review but the ball is clipping leg stump.

Fifth ODI fifty for Usman Khawaja and his partnership with Shaun Marsh has put Australia on course for a big score. Finch's side will be hoping that the partnership carries on.

Rayudu concedes two boundaries as Usman Khawaja nears a well-made fifty. This is the kind of partnership Australia will need if they have to get to a big total.

Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja are starting to rebuild for Australia. Khawaja, in particular, is looking good for a fifty. Ambati Rayudu is into the attack now.

Shaun Marsh gets going with a boundary as he flicks Mohammed Shami to the deep midwicket fence. He was in good control of the shot there.

WICKET! Kuldeep Yadav, you beauty. He bowls the slider and it kicks up from the Sydney deck. Carey is cramped for the cut and he edges it to Rohit Sharma at slip. Australia in trouble and they could have been in evern greater trouble if Usman Khawaja was trapped LBW, however, the ball was just pitching outside the line of leg stump.

Mohammed Shami comes into the attack and he bowls the right channels immediately. Khaleel Ahmed is struggling to contain the flow of runs.

Alex Carey is looking in great touch as he capitalises on some loose bowling from Khaleel Ahmed. He also smashes a boundary of Bhuvneshwar as Australia look to rebuild.

WICKET! The inswinger works wonders for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Full ball darting back in, Finch gets the inside edge and the ball crashes into the stumps. 100th wicket for Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets some movement and raps Finch on the pads but the appeal for LBW is denied. Khaleel Ahmed struggles with his line and length.

Aaron Finch has said the key to success will be having plenty of wickets towards the death overs. However, Virat Kohli losing the toss might not be a bad idea afterall. He is the master chaser.

Peter Siddle will play his first ODI after eight years while Nathan Lyon also makes a comeback. Jason Behrendorff will make his ODI debut. Here are the playing XIs
