New Delhi:

Australia chose to bat and they got off to a great start thanks to a magnificent 112-run stand for the opening wicket between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch. Both batsmen reached fifty but Finch was trapped LBW by Jasprit Bumrah. The middle order wobbled and it took an 81-run stand between Shaun Marsh and Travis Head. Head reached his fifty but Marsh was undone by Hanuma Vihari. The second new ball helped India make further inroads with Ishant Sharma getting Head out for 58. However, Tim Paine and Pat Cummins have ensured Australia have reached a good total on a wicket that is assisting the pacers immensely. (SCORECARD)

That will be stumps on day 1. Australia are 277/6 and they will be pleased with their effort. Marcus Harris and Travis Head star for Australia but Ishant Sharma and Hanuma Vihari were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets apiece.

Paine is batting confidently but Bumrah is getting exaggerated movement off the deck. Pat Cummins and Paine are lucky that they are not edging it.

Australia are somehow managing to hang on. The shadows have engulfed the main square at the stadium and we might not be able to stretch play till 3:20 PM IST.

WICKET! Head has lost his head. Bad shot. Short ball and Head upper-cuts it straight to third man. The umpires check for the no-ball but Ishant is safe there. Only just. A solid knock from Head ends but he could have done so much better.

India have taken the second new ball. They will at least want one or two wickets with this new cherry in order to start day 2 on a high.

Head gets another boundary to the third man fence but India can now take the second new ball. This will be vital to their chances and they will be looking to take a couple of wickets. However, they have not taken it. Hanuma Vihari continues.

WICKET! Another massive moment before the second new ball and Vihari has struck again. The ball drifts away and the edge is taken by Rahane. Australia have lost a vital wicket before the new ball, Marsh gone for 45.

India are wheeling away here. The new ball is just five overs away

Both Marsh and Head are making smooth progress. Another wicket for India could turn the session again? Only about 70 minutes remain in the day.

The partnership between Head and Shaun Marsh has reached 50. These two are once again putting up a good fight, like they did in the second innings in Adelaide.

Shaun Marsh looks to cut a flatter delivery from Hanuma Vihari but Pant fluffs the chance. Sledging is alright but if one cannot back it with steady wicketkeeping, then it can backfire.

India are continuing to apply the screws but Shaun Marsh and Travis Head have steadied the ship. The partnerships is nearing fifty.

WICKET! Brilliant catch from Virat Kohli. Handscomb looked to steer a short ball to third man but the extra bounce disoncerts him and Kohli plucks a magnificent catch at gully with his right hand. Fantastic fielding and Australia slip further.

That is tea on the first day. India have fought back well in this session and they have taken three wickets. Australia are 145/3 and they will need a good partnership to get going.

WICKET! Gone, another one! The pressure has reaped dividends and Australia are unravelling here. Hanuma Vihari gets his first Test wicket. The extra bounce from the Perth wicket does the trick and the batsman edges it to slip where Ajinkya Rahane takes the catch. Harris gone for a well-made 70.

WICKET! The pressure has gotten to Usman Khawaja and he has thrown it away. Short and wide ball from Umesh Yadav and the batsman edges it to Pant. Australia are 130/2, with Harris still going strong.

Marcus Harris is dropped by KL Rahul at second slip as he gets a boundary to third man. At the other end, Khawaja has consumed 35 balls just for five runs.

Bumrah is touching close to 90 mph on this deck. Usman Khawaja and Marcus Harris are hanging in there. The pitch is starting to assist the bowlers even more now.

Aaron Finch hits his second fifty and gets there in style with back-to-back boundaries off Hanuma Vihari. However, he is trapped LBW by Jasprit Bumrah and departs for 50. That is a vital wicket for India.

The partnership between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch has neared 100. This is the kind of partnership that can help them set the tone in this Test match.

FIFTY for Harris! What a moment. In front of his home fans and with Justin Langer as the coach, it has been a stunning knock. Can he go on to make a big score?

Harris nears a fifty with yet another crunching drive through cover. He is nearing a fifty. What a moment this would be for Marcus Harris, scoring in Perth in front of his home fans with Justin Langer as the coach.

Welcome back to the second session. Kohli's side will be determined to take some quick wickets but the Australian openers have made a confident start, with Harris crashing Shami to to the deep cover fence.

Lunch on day 1 of the Perth Test and it is comfortably Australia's session. Finch and Harris managed to negotiate a tough period in which there was movement and assistance both in the air and off the wicket. India could not maintain the consistency and leaked runs. Australia are 66/0 and they would be hoping to build from here.

Finch edges a length ball from Bumrah but it eludes KL Rahul at slip and goes away to the boundary. The scoring rate is decent for Australia, compared to Adelaide where they had batted very slowly.

India are desperately searching for the breakthrough now. Finch and Harris have negotiated the period well as Kohli searches for options.

The fifty-run partnership is up between Harris and Finch. After a long time, the opening partnership is coming good for Australia. Harris cracks a short ball from Umesh Yadav to the deep backward point fence.

Oh, India have opted for a review as Shami pings Aaron Finch in front of the crease. Virat Kohli opts for the review but the ball is just missing the stumps. India have lost the review. It was not clipping so India will have only one review left.

After a slow start, Marcus Harris gets going with two boundaries off Umesh Yadav. Kohli is rotating the pacers around. Mohammed Shami is in. If India want some spin relief, they can potentially turn to Hanuma Vihari, who can bowl offspin.

Finch and Harris have stitched a steady opening stand. If they can survive the next 20-25 minutes, they would have done a great job.

Finch and Harris get going with boundaries while Ishant oversteps. Ricky Ponting had pointed out in the Adelaide game that the umpires had not seen Ishant overstep a lot of times. He counted about 16 of them.

After 15 balls, Marcus Harris gets off the mark. The Indian bowlers are not giving away an inch on this wicket as they get movement both in the air and off the deck.

Aaron Finch continues to bat in a steady manner. Ishant is so far not overstepping and he is getting plenty of movement. Marcus Harris, at the other end, is yet to open his account.

Aaron Finch scores the first Test runs at the New Perth stadium by pulling Jasprit Bumrah to the deep midwicket fence. This should give him some confidence after his failures in the Adelaide Test.

Ishant Sharma starts off proceedings with three slips and a gully. There is plenty of movement off the deck and in the air as well. Good bounce also. Welcome to the new Perth stadium.

Here are the playing XIs

India: Lokesh Rahul, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli(c), Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant(w), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah

Australia: Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Tim Paine(w/c), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

Australia have won the toss and chosen to bat. India have gone for an all-out pace attack, with Umesh Yadav teaming up with Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.

Hello and a warm welcome to the second Test. For all fans thinking that this match would happen at the WACA, the wicket where great pace and bounce is the norm of the day and the Fremantle Doctor is part of the match dynamics, one would be disappointed. The match will be played at the swanky but new Perth stadium. Modern times but we must move along with it. Toss shortly.
