New Delhi:

Mayank Markande, who has been part of the Mumbai Indians franchise for the last couple of seasons, has been traded to the Delhi Capitals for the next edition of the Indian Premier League. Markande, the Punjab legspinner, has enjoyed success with the four-time IPL champions and he will now be wanting to create the same impact with the Delhi Capitals, who reached the playoff stage last year. In return, Mumbai Indians have roped in Guyana and West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford.

"We wish Mayank the very best for his future. Mayank is a brilliant talent and we were fortunate to have spotted and nurtured him early. It is a difficult decision for us, but we are releasing Mayank for better cricketing prospects and know that Mayank is on the cusp of emerging as yet another shining star of Indian cricket. He will always be a part of the Mumbai Indians family. I am excited to welcome the talented Sherfane into our family. Sherfane has impressed us with his all-round skills and match-winning attitude. His exploits across the world at such an early stage of his career has been impressive and we believe he will find his home at Mumbai Indians," MI owner Akash Ambani said in a statement.

The Punjab spinner claimed 15 wickets in 14 matches in IPL 2017 and was subsequently retained by the Mumbai Indians franchise for the upcoming season. Markande made his debut for the Indian cricket team as he was handed the cap by the team seniors ahead of the first T20I encounter against Australia in Visakhapatnam.

"Get a national call-up is the biggest achievement in a player’s career. To be honest I was not expecting this. I did not think I would get included the national set-up this early. I consider myself really lucky. My performances in the Ranji Trophy along with meaningful performances for India A must have been noticed by the selectors and I am really happy that they have given me a chance to prove myself," Markande was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
