New Delhi:

The Bay Oval ODI between India and New Zealand has confirmed one thing. MS Dhoni is a freak of nature. Indeed he is. He can finish the death overs in style, he can read the mind of the batsmen to jaw-droppingly accurate levels and he can effect quick stumpings which are out of this world. New Zealand got an exhibition today and Ross Taylor was the unlucky batsman to witness the freakish powers of Dhoni. The right-hander was trying to rebuild for New Zealand and he tried to punch a flatter delivery from offspinner Kedar Jadhav but he played inside the line to get stumped. What followed was a Dhoni masterclass.

The former India skipper quickly whipped the bails off in a flash but did not show too much excitement. In the cricketing world, such is the accuracy of Dhoni’s stumping that generally when he appeals, the third umpire has to take a look which they duly did in this case. Replays showed that Taylor, who was beaten on the outside edge, had his back foot lifted for a split of a second and at the same time, Dhoni broke the bails. The moment that Taylor’s foot was slightly up was confirmed when the frames were magnified and it confirmed the foot was lifted. Taylor was given out for 22 and credit for the wicket should go to Dhoni, the stumper.

This is not the first time that Dhoni has effected such a miraculous stumping in an international game. During the World T20 contest in 2016 between Bangladesh and India at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, Sabbir Rahman was batting confidently and on 26, Suresh Raina bowled a quicker delivery down the leg side. Sabbir let it go and was slightly unbalanced. However, so quick was Dhoni that he collected the ball in a fast way and immediately broke the bails. The momentum of Sabbir made him unbalanced slightly but his front foot was out of the crease and the back foot had lifted for a fraction of a second. Dhoni’s quick action had gotten a wicket.

However, the match turned out to be a thriller and with two runs needed off one ball, Shuvagata Hom missed a short ball and Mustafizur Rahman looked to steal a bye. However, Dhoni ran very quickly, almost as quick as Usain Bolt and ran him out as India won by one run to stay alive in the World T20.

Dhoni’s premonition in Napier when it came to dismissing the batsman helped Kuldeep Yadav get a wicket. In Mount Maunganui, his super quick stumping has ensured that his skills continue to dazzle cricket fans all over the world.
