Prithvi Shaw had scored a century on Test debut in the game against West Indies in Rajkot. The Mumbai youngster, who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title in early 2018, was selected for the tour of Australia and he made a mark with a composed fifty in the warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI but an ankle injury ruled him out of the entire tour. After being sidelined for three months, Shaw is back on the cricketing field and he has been included in the Mumbai side for the Syed Mushtaq Ali 2019 trophy which will begin from February 21.
Speaking to the Times of India, Shaw said he has overcome the sadness of not playing in the Tests against Australia but is focused on scoring runs yet again. “I thought I would recover, but the swelling would keep coming back. Initially, I was very sad to miss the Tests in Australia, because I wanted to win games for India. I would have gained good experience playing against a quality attack, but I can't do anything about it. However, I felt better when we beat Australia in the Test series,” Shaw said.
Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy and aided by some excellent performances from Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, India achieved history by winning a Test series for the first time Down Under.
Shaw said that he would be hoping to give Mumbai something to smile after a poor Ranji Trophy season in which the team failed to reach the knock-out stages. “I am really looking forward to taking the field again and performing at my best. I have missed playing competitive cricket due to my injury and I'm ready now to give my best for Mumbai and India,” Shaw stated.
Aside from scoring a century on Test debut, Shaw made headlines when he smashed 546, the highest score by an Indian batsman in minor cricket - during a Harris Shield match at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Shaw's innings lasted 367 minutes over two days and included a whopping 85 fours and five sixes which boosted his team, Rizvi Springfield. Shaw blasted four centuries in five domestic competition innings and his great start in all forms has earmarked him for greatness in the coming years.
