India were making good progress in the death overs against West Indies during the first ODI at the MA Chidambaram stadium. Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav were stringing a solid partnership as they were 268/5 after 47 overs. In the 48th over bowled by Keemo Paul, the bowler struck with the third ball as Jadhav miscued a slow and short ball on middle and leg stump as he holed out to long on. On the fourth ball, there was some controversy as Ravindra Jadeja was run-out in bizarre circumstances. Jadeja dug a full ball outside off to the off side and quickly set off for a quick single.
Roston Chase ran in and fired a throw at the bowler's end. He scored a direct hit as Jadeja looked to come back into the crease. Chase appealed politely to umpire Shaun George but he did not call for the third umpire. From that point, there was confusion. Reportedly, there were some West Indies players who saw the replay on the big screen and raised a question. Windies skipper Kieron Pollard approached the umpires and asked why the decision was not taken upstairs. The ball was almost dead but suddenly the umpires called for the third umpire to check whether the batsman was run-out. Pollard was indulging in some chat with Ravindra Jadeja and replays showed that the batsman was run-out as the bail was dislodged.
Jadeja was given the marching orders and this did not impress Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper. As Jadeja approached the dressing room, an angry Kohli looked at the direction of the match referee David Boon and went in the dressing room. There was another report which said the replay was not shown on the big screen and that it was another case of umpire misjudgment.

India managed to reach 287/8 thanks to aggressive fifties from Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Pant and Iyer, batting at No.5 and No.4 respectively, strung a partnership of over 100 as India reached a good total on a sluggish pitch. However, the run-out would be the talking point in the match as both teams look to get on the board in the three-match series. West Indies have not won an ODI series against India since 2006 while India are gunning for their 10th straight bilateral series win.
