New Delhi:

Russell Domingo, who was the coach of the South African cricket team from 2013 to 2017 after replaching Gary Kirsten, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. The 44-year-old Domingo has agreed to a two-year deal with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Wednesday to take charge. Bangladesh had no coach for over a month after the Cricket Board parted ways with Steve Rhodes following the team's eighth-place finish in the league stage of the World Cup. BCB Director and former skipper Khaled Mahmud took temporary charge during an 0-3 defeat to Sri Lanka in a three-match one-day international series in late July.

In a Bangladesh Cricket Board press release which carried Domingo's statement, it read, "I have followed Bangladesh's progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of."

BCB president Nazmul Hasan also expressed satisfaction over Domingo's appointment. "He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy. We also sought a full-time coach... (Domingo) said he was very keen to work with the boys and didn't want any holiday breaks. These are the reasons why we found him suitable," Hasan said.

Domingo was the assistant coach of South Africa in 2011. He replaced Gary Kirsten as national team head coach of the Proteas in 2013 and remained there 2017. He led South Africa to semifinals of the 2014 World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. Domingo will have compatriots Charl Langeveldt and Neil McKenzie among his support staff. Bangladesh last month appointed Langeveldt as the pace bowling coach and retained McKenzie as batting coach.

Indian spinner Sunil Joshi, who was with the Bangladesh team since 2017 August had called it a day after the end of ICC World Cup 2019, and Daniel Vettori is set to replace him. Langeveldt, on the other hand, replaced former Windies fast bowler Courtney Walsh, whose contract ended after the World Cup in England and Wales.

Daniel Vettori will join the Bangla Tigers ahead of the tour of India, which is scheduled to get underway in the first week of November. The tour consists of three T20Is and a couple of Tests. Vettori has some experience in the coaching field. He was the coach of the Brisbane Heat for four years but decided not to renew his contract. He also coached the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Middlesex.
