New Delhi:

Stuart Broad has been one of the best Test bowlers in the England set-up for the last decade. His ability to run through oppositions on a regular basis in the Test arena has made him a force to be reckoned with. His new-ball pairing with James Anderson has been the most prolific in the history of Test cricket. Currently, Broad has the second-most Test wickets for England while Anderson is the leading pacer in the longest format of the game. On the first day of the Ashes contest against Australia in Edgbaston, Broad entered a special list as he took his seventh five-wicket haul.

Broad took the wickets of Cameron Bancroft and David Warner cheaply and he was well supported by Chris Woakes who took three wickets. Broad returned and took the wicket of Australia skipper Tim Paine and James Pattinson before ending the Australian innings with 5/86 by dismissing Steve Smith for a brilliant 144. When Broad got the wicket of Smith, the right-arm pacer became the ninth England player and 13th overall to take 100 wickets against Australia in Tests.

Broad joins Sir Ian Botham, Bob Willis, Wilfred Rhodes, Sydney Barnes, Derek Underwood, James Anderson, Alec Bedser and Bobby Peel as the other England bowlers to take 100 wickets. Apart from England, Lance Gibbs and Courtney Walsh of West Indies, Sir Richard Hadlee of New Zealand and India's Anil Kumble are the other bowlers to have achieved this feat against Australia. Botham is the leading wicket-taker with 148 wickets from 36 Tests with nine five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket hauls. Hadlee has the most five and ten-wicket hauls against Australia, with 14 and three hauls respectively.

Broad has the fifth-best individual haul in a Test innings against Australia, having taken 8/15 in the Trent Bridge Test in 2015 which saw Australia being bowled out for 60 in just 18.2 overs. Jim Laker holds the record for the best individual haul when he took 10/53 and 9/37 in Manchester in 1956. Hadlee, India's Jasu Patel and Pakistan's Sarfraz Nawaz picked up 9/52, 9/69 and 9/86 respectively.

In the 2013 Test in Durham, Broad took 11 wickets as England retained the Ashes and in 2013, he followed it up with his first five-wicket haul Down Under when he took 6/81 in the opening Test in Brisbane.
