New Delhi:

September 1 was a very busy day in the cricketing calendar. The third day of the Jamaica Test between West Indies and India was going on while Sri Lanka took on New Zealand in the first Twenty20 International in Pallekele. In England, there was the Women's Cricket Super League tournament finals. However, Super Saturday witnessed a unique feat across the globe. The day saw a total of six golden ducks, a silver duck and a diamond duck combined across all matches. There were some big names in that list, including Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli in Jamaica. Colin Munro, who has hit three centuries in Twenty20 Internationals, was the other big name while Smriti Mandhana, considered to be the best woman batter of the modern era was also dismissed for a golden duck.

The day began with Kohli falling for his ninth duck. This was his fourth golden duck in his Test career and his first since the Oval Test against England in September 2018. The Indian skipper fell to his traditional weakness of poking outside the off stump as Kemar Roach got a fullish length delivery to move away just outside off and Kohli edged it to the keeper. While the action continued in Jamaica, at the same time, New Zealand were chasing 175 against Sri Lanka in the Twenty20 International in Pallekele.

Kusal Mendis had blasted 79 and helped Sri Lanka reach 174/4. In response, Munro was cleaned up by a yorker from Lasith Malinga to fall for a golden duck but Colin de Grandhomme and Ross Taylor's stand, combined with some clean hitting from Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner helped New Zealand win by five wickets.

When the action in Pallekele ended and the Test in Jamaica was nearing the end, the Women's Cricket Super League tournament began at County Ground in Hove. In the first match between Loughborough Lightning and Southern Vipers, Loughborough Lightning chose to bat but they stuttered to 143 in 19.5 overs. Their innings witnessed two golden ducks from Lucy Higham and Kirstie Gordon. Southern Vipers won the match by five wickets with Suzie Bates and Danielle Wyatt chipping in with vital contributions. In the match, there was also a silver duck, meaning a two-ball duck Joanne Gardner run out by Tammy Beaumont.

In the next match between Southern Vipers and Western Storm, Maia Boucher was run-out for a diamond duck as she went back to the pavilion without facing a ball. The duck tales did not end there in cricket. Smriti Mandhana was dismissed first ball and Sophie Luff was dismissed by Amanda Wellington for a first ball duck.

With all these incidents, it will be better if September 1 is declared as World Golden Duck Day in cricket.
