New Delhi:

Austria's Dominic Thiem stunned second seed Novak Djokovic in the men's singles quarter-finals of the French Open on Wednesday to secure his maiden semifinal berth at Roland Garros.

Theim registered a comprehensive straight set win over his more fancied opponent, sealing the match 7-6, 6-3, 6-0.

It was Thiem who ended Nadal’s 17-match winning run on clay by beating him in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open. Theim shall now take on Rafael Nadal in the semifinals on Friday. Nadal breezed into the semis after his opponent Pablo Carreno Busta retired in their quarterfinal encounter.

Dominic Thiem was ecstatic after securing his biggest career win. The rising tennis star was overwhelmed with joy and had this to say about his won over Djokovic.

“To beat him for the first time in the quarter-finals of the French Open is a dream. “It was a little bit tough today because it was windy and colder than the previous days. “It’s amazing how difficult it is to go deep in a Grand Slam. You have to play the best guys round after round. “It’s not getting easier on Friday.”
