Social media site Facebook on Tuesday confirmed its platform outage but did not explain the cause of the issues.

Facebook users were having trouble accessing its social site, including Instagram, the second instance in the past two weeks in which technical issues appeared to affect access to its site.

“We know some people are having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” Facebook tweeted.

“We are currently experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly. We are investigating the issue and working on a resolution,” a Facebook spokesperson told ABC News in an email.

Soon after the issue was aroused, Facebook users around the world took to Twitter to complain about the outages. The hashtag #FacebookDown was trending on the microblogging site.

However, the outages didn’t seem to affect all the over 2.2 billion active users.

The independent monitoring site Downdetector showed a map indicating outages affecting most parts of the world, especially in North America, Europe and Asia.

Facebook, which operates the Instagram photo-sharing platform and the WhatsApp and Messenger applications, has been under pressure in recent weeks over its handling of misinformation campaigns, and its hiring of a consultancy that sought to do damage control for the company.
