Facebook suspends 200 apps over Cambridge Analytica fiasco

New Delhi:

Facebook on Monday said that it had suspended around 200 apps on its platform as it investigated which of them had misused the private user data.

The investigation was launched after revelations that Cambridge Analytica hijacked the private data of 87 million Facebook users while working for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016.

"The investigation process is in full swing," Ime Archibong, Facebook product partnerships vice president said in a statement.

"We have large teams of internal and external experts working hard to investigate these apps as quickly as possible. To date thousands of apps have been investigated and around 200 have been suspended -- pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data’’, Ime Archibong added.

Archibing said that wherever the Facebook team would find evidence that an app misused data, we would ban it and notify people via the website.

"Where we find evidence that these or other apps did misuse data, we will ban them and notify people via this website’’, Ime Archibong wrote in his blog.

The revelations over the misuse of data by Cambridge Analytica have prompted investigations and Facebook had to strengthen its policies on how the personal data is accessed and shared.

The social networking site made a policy change in the year 2014, which limited the access to user data but it noted some apps had obtained data prior to the revision.

"There is a lot more work to be done to find all the apps that may have misused people's Facebook data -- and it will take time," Archibong said.
