Google on Saturday celebrated 971st birthday of renowned Persian mathematician Omar Khayyam with a doodle. Khayyam was born on May 18, 1048 in Nishapur in north-east Iran. At the age of 22, Khayyam made his name in the field of mathematics through the publication of Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra and Balancing. Omar’s fame in the West rests upon the collection of Rubaiyat, or “quatrains,” attributed to him. (A quatrain is a piece of verse complete in four lines; it is close in style and spirit to the epigram.) Khayyam became famous for his poems posthumously, having died at the age of 83 on 4 December 1131.

Omar Khayyam Birthday: Top five poems by the mathematician legend

1. Drink wine. This is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.

2. To wisely live your life, you don't need to know much
Just remember two main rules for the beginning:
You better starve, than eat whatever
And better be alone, than with whoever.

3. Your hand can seize today, but not tomorrow; and thoughts of your tomorrow are nothing but desire. Don’t waste this breath, if your heart isn’t crazy, since "the rest of your life" won’t last forever.

4. How sad, a heart that
does not know how to love, that
does not know what it is to be drunk with love.
If you are not in love, how can you enjoy
the blinding light of the sun,
the soft light of the moon?

5. A book of verses underneath the bough
A flask of wine, a loaf of bread and thou
Beside me singing in the wilderness
And wilderness is paradise now.
