Mohammad Ibrahim Zauq was a known Urdu poet and a shayar laureate during the reign of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. His flair was further honed under the mentorship of the famous poet Shah Nasir. Zauq was a major contemporary of Ghalib and in the history of Urdu sher-o-shayari the rivalry of the two poets is widely known. When he was alive, Zauq’s popularity exceeded that of Ghalib for the critical values in those days were mainly confined to judging a piece of poetry on the play of words, phrases and idioms.
