Male summons Indian envoy over Subramanian's ‘Invade Maldives’ tweet

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy’s controversial tweet that ‘India should invade Maldives’ if rigging takes places in the upcoming presidential elections, had conveyed Male’s displeasure. The statement has triggered diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Maldivian Foreign office had summoned Indian envoy Akhilesh Mishra after Swamy urged Centre to ‘invade’ the Island nation if the polls are rigged. However, Indian government had clarified that such opinion is personal and does not represent the Union government of India’s official policy.
