Day after the Election Commission issued an unprecedented order of curtailing poll campaigning in West Bengal, the Congress reacted sharply and said that the poll panel was punishing democracy. Addressing the media in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the Bengal order “appears to be EC's parting gift to PM Modi - to ensure that his 2 remaining rallies in WB aren't impacted by its order.” Surjewala also said that the cancellation of poll campaigning was a “glaring example of the Election Commission is being muzzled into submission by Modi government.”
