Twentysix Afghan soldiers were killed and 13 others suffered injuries in Tuesday-night Taliban attack on a military base in southern Kandahar province, the defence ministry said on Wednesday.

Afghanistan Ministry of Defence spokesperson General Dawlat Waziri said, “The militants attacked an army camp in Karzali area of Kjakrez district of Kandahar last night. Our soldiers bravely resisted the strike, killing more than 80 insurgents.”

Ministry said that that they have learnt that 30-strong convoy of Taliban militants attacked the army base camp from all directions.

The Taliban militants have carried out more complex attacks against the government troops in 2017.

Earlier in April at least 135 soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack at Mazar-i-Sharif army base.

The Taliban gunmen disguised as doctors stormed Sardar Daun Khan hospital in Kabul killing at least dozen in March.
